I joined Mecserve’s CAD department in 2004 where I assisted the Engineering department by producing mechanical and electrical services drawings. This experience got me interested in the design process, so I asked if I could be trained as a design engineer. Mecserve supported me and provided me with the necessary training and support, and I was soon working on a new office building in Regent Street that was being inserted behind a retained façade. It wasn’t long before I was on site and sitting in meetings. Although my new exposure was daunting at the time, the practical nature of these new experiences was a perfect way to learn.
In parallel with providing mentorship and support at work, Mecserve also sponsored me via day release to obtain my honours degree in Building Services Engineering. I later followed this by continuing my education and obtaining my MSC degree in Sustainable Energy Systems.
I believe that it was the blend of support and academic opportunities which has enabled my career to develop and ultimately enabled me to be promoted to the position of Senior Engineer, leading projects of all types (offices, residential care, hotels, residential, educational and healthcare) and which now sees me able to mentor others, helping the next generation of Mecserve engineers to flourish.
I started my career as a Mechanical Engineer more than twenty years ago, but following a career break, I returned to the industry wanting a change from what I had been doing previously. It was at this point that I joined Mecserve as part of their Facilities Management team.
I was drawn to Facilities Management because I wanted a hands-on role, plenty of variety and a fast turnaround of projects – and I have found everything I was seeking.
Right from the outset I was given plenty of opportunities within the business, lots of room to grow, and supportive line management. Mecserve's enlightened attitude to CPD has meant that I have been able to grasp at every opportunity to develop my skills, to stay right on top of innovations in the industry and to expand my knowledge to better serve our clients.
The projects I have worked on have been varied, but I have particularly enjoyed working on projects for Grosvenor Estates and Qube Project Management, and I value the close relationships that I have forged with my counterparts in their teams.
My career progression at Mecserve has been all that I could wish for. I joined as an Engineer, was promoted to Senior Engineer and then again to Associate level. Looking forward, it is my ambition to help further grow the FM business and team, and I would feel satisfied to know that other engineers in my team were being given the opportunities that I have been given as part of an expanding business.
